Lot No. 175

Adriaen Hanneman

(The Hague 1602–1671) circle of Portrait of a young lady in a park landscape, oil on canvas, 80 x 42 cm, framed

This portrait is one of a series of so-called “Court Beauties”, and thus show the influence of van Dyck and Peter Lely. This is a genre of painting which developed in the reign of Charles II of Great Britain, paying homage to the most beautiful ladies of the court in a series of mostly small-format paintings. Variants of the most famous of these galleries of beauties, the ‘Hampton Court Beauties’ by Sir Peter Lely, were painted by his pupil, Edward Byng. They demonstrate some similarities with the present painting. Nonetheless, the attire of the lady depicted and her coiffure point to an earlier date of production, between 1660 and 1670, during the reigns of Charles II or James II. It is also stylistically dissimilar to the late works of Adriaen Hanneman, van Dyck’s most important assistant in England.
